From here at the top of Newington Rd , we can see a sycamore that's grown from
a sapling to a tall tree over the last 12 months. And we've also noticed the
brambles getting higher. If there is a chance that some clearing can be done
after the blackberry season, it'll not be before time. It is getting wilder
(and more difficult to see the foxes).
Happy to help.

Subj: [eccotalk] Re: Mayfield valley walk - Sat. 26th from 10am
Sally,
I agree that the vegetation is getting very overgrown. I live on Everton and
back onto the alley where the plants are encroaching rapidly. I did think about
giving them a snip back but I haven't got the right equipment to do this
quickly. Some strong sheers
or a strimmer would seem ideal.
I did wonder who owns the land and whether we could use a bit of grant money
for maintenance? Perhaps something to discuss at the next ECCO meeting if
others are interested? Unfortunately due to commitments on Tuesdays I haven't
been able to attend one for
some time. Whilst it's nice for the land not to be build on and to have some
greenery I am a little concerned that it just gets to overgrown.
The blackberries are great though!

Sorry Gorden, I would have liked to join you but I can't make the walk. I'm
wood firing some pots this weekend, maybe next time if you do another.
Also for neighbours backing the 'wild space' and foxes home (half side of
Newington and a bit of Everton) the vegetation and trees are getting very
over grown, I wonder if there is anything we can do? I'm already snipping 6
foot bramble briars lashing at my fence, and picking a few fruits too!

Just a reminder that the weather is good for this Saturday's walk through
Mayfield valley, so hope that at least some of you can come. This will be
a relaxing walk with time for conversation and to enjoy the countryside in
the sunshine.
We will meet at the Ecclesall Road/Neill Road bus stop (near the Spar
shop) at 10.00am to catch the 83a bus at 10.10 up to the top of Brooklands
Avenue in Fulwood, on the edge of the Mayfield valley.
We will stop for a refreshment break to enjoy the views across the valley
and the whole of Sheffield, so bring some food and drink.
The walk will end at Forge Dam Cafe where you can have lunch. You can get
the bus back from Fulwood or walk back down the Porter to Hunters Bar.
See you there,
Gordon
