I have noticed that part of our cellar floor at 31 Rossington nearest
the 'jump' up to the neighbour getting damp in recent weeks, and also
last winter. It dried out earlier in the year when we had the prolonged
dry spell. Our cellar has a damp-proofed concrete floor, so sadly it
would seem some moisture is getting over the damp proofing which is
under the concrete. This has not happened in the previous 19 years, even
though that corner of the cellar, under the front door, has had damp
walls all the time.
The cellar of our previous house was wringing wet (with dry rot
everywhere), and at one point water was seeping out of the wall, again
alongside the 'jump' up to the neighbour. I completely solved the
problem by making a half metre deep sump at the wettest point and
filling it with 10mm sharp gravel and then covering the whole floor with
50mm of the same 10mm sharp gravel then laying a damp proof membrane
(2000 gauge polythene) and then 50mm sand and then another sheet of 2000
gauge polythene - in case the first sheet was punctured by the gravel -
and then 100mm concrete (I had, of course, to also dig out the cellar
floor first to preserve head height under the floor above). The result
was dramatic - in six months the whole thing had dried out including the
walls and I was able to set up my workshop in it and and keep my tools
there.
So, unless you want to have a liveable in room down there, I suggest
just look at damp proofing the floor.

Hi David,
That was exactly our experience in Jarrow Road - that's why we had to follow the neighbours' example and get our cellar tanked, too...

Dear ECCO members
In the last month or so my cellar floor has become wet (40
Everton) after 30 years of being just very slightly damp. I
have had a number of inspections, including Yorkshire Water to
check for leaks, and they are all saying it is because the
water table is rising due to the increase in rainfall over the
last few years. I can either put up with a wet cellar or have
it 'tanked' at considerable cost.
Is anyone else having the same experience?
Also has anyone had their cellar tanked or waterproofed and if
so by whom?
Any experiences, tips, warnings or reassurances would be very
welcome.
Thanks
