Essential weekend engineering works to prepare Sheffield’s tramlines for Tram Train will take place in the New Year. The Tram Train between Sheffield and Rotherham is planned to launch between Sheffield and Rotherham in 2017 and these works are required on certain parts of the network to allow tram train vehicles to run.

Passengers in South Yorkshire will be the first in the country to benefit from pioneering Tram Trains that will provide a direct service from Sheffield city centre to Rotherham Central and Parkgate, travelling on street tramlines and the national rail network.

Engineering work to adapt the Supertram track for Tram Train has taken place overnight since 30 October. The works in the New Year are required due to the Tram Trains requiring a different wheel profile from the current tram to allow operation on the heavy rail system.

Once completed, Tram Trains will be tested on the adapted tracks before being introduced on the Supertram network to provide extra services at busy times.

*Supertram Service Disruptions from Saturday 10 January 2016*

Dedicated YX and Y1 bus services will replace trams between Fitzalan Square and Meadowhall.
