On the theme of getting your roof fixed - our son was recently taken in by a so-called 'reputable' Sheffield roofing company, who claimed that all the roof needed was some repairs, and it would last a few years before needing replacing. A lot of money later, they realised that the company was making money out of them with constant repairing, when what was needed from the start was a new roof. Almost all Victorian and Edwardian slate-roofed houses now need their roofs replacing after over 100 years of keeping the weather out - not necessarily because the slates are bad, but because the slate nails and lathes will have rotted. So don't get taken in - and a new roof will be laid over a breathable membrane, making leaks into your home much lass likely for decades to come.

And on new slate roofs - make sure you ask what will happen to the old slates - second hand Welsh slates can cost more than new foreign slates, and some companies of dubious reputation will try and hide this from you whilst cashing in by selling them on. Our son had the sound old slates reused, and matching second hand Welsh slates bought to replace those beyond salvaging.

   Cold Caller

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good afternoon Residents

We have received several reports in the past few days of a white male in a white van approaching properties advising them that they require several roof tiles fixing.
Below are some tips in dealing with cold caller trades people attending your property. The information has been provided by Trading Standards.

TEN TOP TIPS

If someone does knock at your door and tries to sell you something, or tells you your roof needs fixing or your driveway needs cleaning for example, here are our Ten Top Tips for dealing with these uninvited callers:

1. Don’t sign on the spot. If you are interested in the service or goods being offered, ask the caller to come back at another time maybe when you have someone with you or you have had a chance to ‘shop around’

2. Ask for ID. If the caller is genuine they will have ID. Look up the organisation they say they are from to check they are genuine

3. Be wary of special offers. Don’t get taken in by sales banter or high pressure selling, if there is a discount it may be that the original price is too high in the first place!

4. Shop around. Check with other companies offering the same service or goods. Make sure the price and the service or product is right for you.

5. Read the small print. Read all documents fully before you sign anything. Tell the caller you want time to do this so ask them to call back at another time to collect the paperwork. Ask for help if you don’t understand what you have been asked to sign.

6. Double check everything. Make sure you fully understand what you are paying for including estimates, delivery, installation and guarantees or warranties. Only agree to the sale once you are completely happy you understand what you are paying for.

7. Get a second opinion. Talk to someone you trust such as family, or a friend or carer before you agree to anything or sign any papers.

8. Don’t hand over cash. Never hand over money before the work is started even if the caller asks for a deposit. Never let the caller take you to the bank or pressure you into going yourself.

9. Think before you agree for work to start. If you agree for the caller to start work or have goods delivered before your 14 day cooling off period, you may have to pay if you later change your mind.

10. Trust your instincts. If the deal sounds too good to be true then it probably is!

And Finally … it’s OK to say NO! Remember, it’s your doorstep, your home and your decision. If you feel pressured or have any doubts say ‘No Thank You’ and ask the person to leave.

If in doubt give us a call on the 101 or email us vis the SYP website.

Thank you for reading.
