Advice: Keep Your Home Safe This Summer

------------------------------------------------------------------------
We all look forward to warmer weather - and so do opportunistic thieves.
As summer approaches, our officers are advising the public to secure their homes and sheds to avoid leaving them vulnerable to crime.
Follow our handy tips and tricks to keep your home and belongings safe and secure.
Designing Out Crime Officer Dene Tinker said: “We are urging householders not to leave windows and doors open during the summer as this makes homes at risk of being targeted by opportunistic thieves.
“We don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun as the summer should be about people getting out and enjoying themselves.
“Unfortunately however, the warmer weather leads to an increase of burglaries of insecure premises and we don’t want to see people coming back to their homes and finding their belongings have been stolen by someone simply walking through an open front door or climbing through an open window.
“Taking a few extra seconds to lock the front or back door, checking the windows are closed and the shed is locked can save significant heartache.
“Please don’t leave security at the bottom of your ‘to do list’, and if you’ve got vulnerable or elderly neighbours, perhaps help them stay safe too.”
Top tips
Close windows – when you leave the house or even if you are in the back in the garden make sure the windows are shut. Fit and use good quality locks on downstairs and accessible windows at all times.
Lock doors – remember not to leave your front or back door unlocked if you’re in the garden or upstairs. At this time of year, there is always an increase in the number of ‘sneak-in’ thefts.
Although we do not practically advice leaving any doors and windows open. One way to help prevent "sneak-in" burglaries is to install good quality ‘Secured by Design’ accredited door chains and window restrictors. These allow doors and windows to be left open slightly while offering some security to deter an opportunist thief.
Secure sheds- Fit good quality locks on garden sheds and use coach bolts to secure the hinges – gardening equipment and furniture are not cheap and are very easy for thieves to sell on.
Remember to lock all tools away because they could be used to force entry into your house. Also, ensure that if you have any bikes in your shed that these are ‘property marked’ and chained securely to a solid base or wall.
Look after neighbours- If you are going away, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye out on your house, and offer to do the same for them in return.
Finally, Please do not advertise on social media that you are away from home.
Anyone with information about crime should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
