Clare, It wasn't the sex I hated about "King of the badgers", it was the horrible characters, and the lack of plot. I had little sympathy with any of the characters, and the plot didn't seem to be going anywhere much. I have often thought I should try an Alan Hollinghurst, but reading yours and David's comments about his books, I'm now not so sure. as far as murder and violence is concerned, I'm really softening up, and shy away from anything involving either. Having said that, the book I'm reading at the moment has a murder in it, but it is integral to the plot. David, I agree with you about the purpose of the group, and will always do my best with the books chosen. I remember many people didn't like King of the Badgers because of all the sex, but I loved that one because I enjoyed the characters and the setting so much. Have you ever read the Line of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst? That's another one about horrible people with too much money, in the Thatcher era. I found it very compelling in a nasty way. They weren't people in the City, but in the Conservative Party. Lots of gay sex and drugs. I don't know why I find drugs so much harder to read about than sex, surely it can't be because they are illegal, because so is murder, and I often enjoy reading about that, even real life ones, though I hated the book about the Wests which I read recently.
