You're right, David, "Protect and Defend" sounds familiar.  I didn't get on 
with it at all, in fact, I abandonned it less than halfway through and went to 
the last page to see how it ended, not something I normally do, but I found the 
whole thing just too turgid.

  I am pretty sure it was Richard north Patterson, one of his presidential 
series, possibly "protect and defend".

  I haven't ever fancied his books, but then I don't like a lot of American 
politics, okay, I don't like politics of any country much.
  I did watch a film based on one of his books and didn't care for it.  I do 
remember when we read a book for this list about the American Senitor, that was 
really great.  Can someone remind me which author that was?  I keep thinking it 
was Vince Flynn, but I'm sure that's not right. I think it might have been 
Alan's choice.
