Trish, I hadn't thought about the accents, but now you mention it, I heard Joanna speaking her generally rather unctuous words in a posh home counties voice, rather like Moya Leslie, if you remember the voice she used to use for David's girlfriend Sophie many years ago in the Archers, but not quite as wet, if you can imagine that. Of course she won't have sounded anything like that. A friend on another bookish list was recommending the book before Christmas, and I didn't realise at the time that it was among the books I have as text files, because the name didn't ring a bell. She was very pleased to have read it, because she grew up in Ashton and knew all about the true story on which this is based. Clare
