Thanks Trish; I have been told this but I still frequently see James (who is
my son) with just an apostrophe at the end, so I'm clearly not the only one
who is unsure.

Hi Alison,
His name is James, so the apostrophe S comes after his name, as it would if
it was Alison's birthday, Elaine's birthday, or (Applying the same rule)
Chris's birthday.  The fact that James and Chris have names ending in S
doesn't matter.
