I always make a note of book recommendations and who recommended them. I do not always get around to reading them, or at least not immediately. There are always books I know I wish to read, and sometimes others slip down the list. I do tend to know whose recommendations are likely to appeal, and make a particular note of a book I did not expect to like and found it really worth reading. I am currently reading the new Elizabeth George. I used to love her books, but the last three or four in her series have not thrilled me too much. This new one is rather slow and is 720 pages long, so is becoming tedious. The booker winner might well be next, but that is even longer so I just might find something shorter before I tackle that one. As for recommendations - I keep a spreadsheet of recommendations that take my fancy, and then use it when I need ot add titles to my talking book or Calibre selection list. So it's rare for me to read a book at the time suggested, I'm afraid, mainly because I'm always behind with things to be read for book groups etc. However now and again I will rebel and just go for something completely different. I've done this with a couple of the books you've sent through - the political ones - and it's been great to do that. However, I've recently begun to think the flaw in my system is not keeping a note of who recommended the individual titles. But here's what kicked off my train of thought. Before going on holiday I asked for recommendations for a good long book to read. shell not only recommended one, she sent it to me. It's Mary, a novelised account of the wife of Abraham Lincoln. Because just after that the David Peace book became available to me, I didn't take the book with me. But I'm about to start it now. This lead me to wonder whether anyone had acted on recommendations from the list and had either good or bad experiences. Did anyone ever read Evermore by Peter Hamil? I wonder whether Clare or anyone else picked up Delores clayborne? And are there any other examples of recommendations? I'll report back on the book I'm about to start. Provided, that is, the list will allow me to do so.
