Hi Don, I believe what you want is something along the lines of an "HP Jetdirect 300x Print Server". Although there are other makes your employers many prefer, I can say that I have successfully used the Jetdirect 500x with both DBT and the parallel versions of a number of embossers on our own Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Enterprise network. I know these have also been used by a major charity here in the U.K. for exactly the same purpose. http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/us/en/ipg/print-server.html Parallel devices are less popular these days, but this device will allow the embosser to be connected to the network, and shared, just like any other conventional network printer, and yet retain the "lock-down" policy required. All the best, George. -----Original Message----- From: duxuser-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:duxuser-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Barrett, Don Sent: 13 April 2009 22:35 To: 'duxuser@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [duxuser] sharing a local printer in Vista Hi All, Because of our Vista locked down settings administered by the Office of Management and Budget, I am unable to print to an embosser which is attached as a local printer to another computer on the network at our Federal agency. This would require sharing out the other box and that is absolutely forbidden; sharing out the printer on the other computer isn't enough as I still can't see the other pc due to the lock down. I am told that the answer is to turn the local printer into a networked printer through a parallel to Ethernet converter box. Does anyone have a recommendation on the best one to get? Will this work with a Braille embosser? Thanks.
