Hi. I rarely use the six-key entry--don't care for it. It's to hard on the
wrists and since I type more I prefer to edit in print.

Often, I do corrections once the file is translated so then Duxbury doesn't usually put anything I didn't enter in the braille file. It's kind of fun to do it that way and then I just emboss it and I'm through. Part of the fun for me is being able to either edit in the print or braille mode but I've typed almost as long as I've been brailing so switching from typing to braille is no proble for me. But I tend to type faster than I braille these days and it's not as hard on my wrists and hands. In any event, I get enough practice using the braille writer at home--where I have no embosser. <g<

One of the problems I have found using ascii and then translating into braille is that duxbury will spell out things like equals and backslash, so then you have to do those kinds of symbols in duxbury in direct braille.

Very interesting subject!
I prefer to use ASCII because I just can't get used to the feel of the keyboard in six-key mode. I keep wanting to press harder. Also, the spacing of the keyboard keys doesn't "feel right" for braille.
I learned to read ASCII years ago, and it kind of seemed fun and a challenge!
I can do ASCII faster than six-key--including Nemeth input--and usually work in "print" mode; I switch to "braille" only occasionally to check difficult alignment for spatial material.
I guess it's a matter of what you learned first...

Noting the recent questions about Perky Duck reminded me
transcribersagain of my curiosity about six-key entry. Why do transcribers use six-key instead of ASCII Braille? One reason for asking this question is I'm wondering if the transcriber shortage in the US would be eased if
may alsoweren't expected to learn six-key. Thanks, SusanJ
