I'm not clear as to why #4 needs to be so complicated; trying to figure
out "segments" is like trying to figure out who owes what on a large
restaurant bill. Why can't you just ask: "4. Which lines would you like
to have blank?"? To answer #4, I personally would like lines 8 and 17 to
be blank. What that means concerning segments, I don't know.

I can think of four issues: 1. How many folds will there be? 2. How many lines should be skipped for each fold? 3. What character(s), if any, should be put on these lines? 4. How should the resulting "segments" of text lines be arranged, if they will not all be the same size.
Here's what the code will do by default: 1. Two folds. 2. One skipped line per fold. 3. Nothing on the fold lines. 4. I forget whether the big sections will be placed at the top or the bottom -- it's however you (Lissa) prefer it, in any case.
Note, however, that all of these behaviors are configurable.
We were seeking a consensus only to determine what to do about extending the code. In most respects (except point #4, where DBT 10.5 appears to have a bug), we're leaving things as they were in DBT 10.5, regardless of what consensus builds.
More important than our mission to find some consensus about how things should work by default, we were seeking consensus about what things might be varied. I do think that we've found this.

Based on what I've read in these postings, it seems that there is _not_ a consensus on how fold lines should be used? The usage of dot 2-5s is one example.

Don, even with the expanded parameters, the raw code's defaults retain the simplicity.
I tend to compare it with the likes of the [pg] code, where it can be optionally extended to cover specific page number and a prefix.

Mike, although I love the configurability of the folds code as you put forth, I think it has made a very simple concept and code very complicated. If we find that the default behavior is what most users want then I guess it is not a problem but it sure has gotten complicated and the documentation for this code as you propose must be made much clearer and have more examples in its final form.
