Willow,
Funny that it is the Gates of Europe that I am reading too. I agree the book is
user friendly, but my engineer’s brain still wants to refer to maps, timelines,
and an alphabetical cast of characters to keep it all straight in my head. I
just can’t memorize names of people and places that I don’t know how to
pronounce correctly.
So I end up going back and rereading sections whenever some character I can’t
remember does something important but was introduced 10 pages earlier. I have
also given up trying to keep all the different political parties sorted out. It
seems there were new ones almost every month.
European history is very complicated.

There are several new histories on the Ukraine. I have The Gates of Europe
which is quite reader friendly.

I am still working my way through a large book about the history of Ukraine
over the past 2,000 years. My memory for names and dates is poor, so I have
never been a good history buff like Willow. However, this history is so
complicated, and the author seems to assume that all his readers would
automatically recognise who and what he is referring to (e.g. the Hapsburgs,
the Byzantine Empire, etc. etc.) that I must keep my iPad open to look up maps
and get background info on the many different peoples and polities that claimed
ownership of the area we call Ukraine today. At one point Russia controlled the
half Putin is claiming now. The other half was part of the Austria-Hungary
empire. Poland also seems to appear and disappear regularly as wars are won or
these countries are partitioned up by politicians.
Canadian history seems simple by comparison.
Cheers,

Get rid of Nazis? NATO? No.
