Willow,
I started this video to see what it was about and ended up watching the whole
54 minutes (and starting the subsequent video in the series).
If I had been lucky enough to have had this instructor, and his teaching
approach, I probably wouldn’t have dropped Philosophy 101 in the 3rd week of my
first year at the UofA. Being a 17-year-old kid with an engineer’s mind and
approach to problem solving, I quickly discovered I had no idea what was going
on in that classroom.
When I went to see the instructor to get some help, I told him about my
confusion followed by “I guess I just don’t know what Philosophy is”. He
replied “What is Philosophy? That is a very Philosophical question”. That was
it, no further attempt to elaborate or explain further. I said, “Thank you” and
went directly to the Registrars office to drop the course.
Fortunately, over the ensuing years, I have learned that there is more to
decision making than just reviewing the scientific evidence and devising a
logical solution. I never went back to try to get a more formal understanding
of philosophy. However, this course on Moral Philosophy, and the instructor’s
approach, may be worth the time to watch over this pandemic winter.
From this one 54-minute video I think I identify with Jeremy Bentham’s theory
of Utilitarianism, especially with his student John Mill’s description of .”…
actions that maximize happiness and well-being for all affected individuals”. I
think that makes me a Liberal in Alberta too.
Thanks for this,
Bob T
