Hi!

I'm Heather out in San Diego, CA. I've been
driving carriages for the past 11 years. My
website is www.carriagesofsandiego.com. I've
been showing drafts at the County Fairs and
training level carriage driving shows the past 6
years or so. I went to the one CDE in Temecula a
few years back as a spectator and then a training
day up in Ramona too.

I started out riding about 4 years as my
grandmother was into Morgans. She showed and
then also did endurance riding later after that.
She is still going strong out in Nebraska with
Paso Finos.

I've ridden both English H/J, Western Quarter
Horses, and even owned a Missouri Fox Trotter
before they became so popular out there. Both my
parents have walking horses and live in Apple
Valley. Within the last few months, my mom
bought a Morgan gelding that she wants to train
to drive so that she can show. Although we
trained one walker to ground drive and pull a
tire, we found out soon enough that she wasn't
going to be able to show at the regular carriage
driving shows. Her horse doesn't have the
necessary gaits.

I have three Belgians of my own and then my mom's
Percheron. She left him in my care when she
moved to Apple Valley. Since I have way too many
horses for one person, I need to still think of
the fourth as her horse! ;P

Anyhow, one Belgian is about 23 and I still drive
him. The Perch is 8 and has been shown a lot and
did very well. We have a bunch of Championship
and Reserves from showing at the driving training
level shows. We've also did very well showing at
the draft shows. I've tried showing in open
driving classes at other training level shows or
breed shows and have felt unwelcome or not
allowed. Even through the driving classes say
open to all breeds they don't let me know as I
have a draft. Doesn't seem fair when I am told
that minis, Gypsy Vanners, Fjords and other misc
breeds show up.

The other two Belgians are in training to drive
as a pair. I have one green broke to ride and
ground drives very well. The other just ground
drives. We are ready to move on, but I also feel
like I need help in the beginning when I finally
hook to something. Just have to pin down a body.
I'm not sure what I am going to do with them as
they are foundation bred and not big enough to be
competitive at the draft shows. I'll probably
not be allowed to show them in the regular
carriage show classes. I'll just enter them as
over-sized Halflingers!

I also train 1-2 horses to drive each year for
people who ask.
