I live in southern New Mexico. We had a nice drive on Saturday. It was
sunny, about 60 degrees, and kind of windy. We trailered to Deming, about
65 miles from home, and met at a friend's house for a drive and a potluck
meal afterward. I drove one of my pony mules and a friend's welch pony
stallion to his bird-in-hand flyer. They work well together, we used my
mule, Bill, to train his stallion to drive team. The stallion had learned
that if he bolted and ran away, his driver (or rider) would get scared and
put him away. He learned that it didn't work when he was teamed with Bill
and a vehicle with good brakes. Bill wouldn't let him act up, and he
learned to settle down and work. I wouldn't want to drive him to a cart,
singly, but with Bill he is fine. He still bolts a little bit when
something startles him, but it doesn't get him anywhere. Anyway, we had a
great drive, there were 4 carriages and 6 riders.
The wind was getting a little strong by the time we got back to the
trailers, but we could go inside to eat, after we unharnessed and took care
of our equines. Suzy
