Just joined  this List (although a long time member of the Carriage Driving 
List) and
noted your post below.  We too drive pairs (Morgans - 15.1 hh) but have a 
question for you.  When you drive the horses up to the pole and then start 
hitching, are they free standing or tied?  We (wife and  I) always hitch 
together, one heading the horses, the other doing the some order of 
procedure as you use.  Just reluctant to take the risk of an untoward 
incident if we don't have to work alone.
BTW we have found in leading the horses or just heading them up,  that using 
a short dope rope snapped to ring on a gullet strap that is a now a 
permanent of each bridle,  gives the header excellent control of the horses.
