I agree with Kathy's & Jay's reasons why tandem bars are better, but just to be complete in our arguments I want to mention why so many folks are using long traces attached with the tandem keys instead, because from the arguments shown it might see strange, that not everybody is indeed using tandem bars. First: The attachment with the long traces is quicker and is easier to do, as Kathy also mentioned. When the newbie starts his first tandem, he can just add some ropes to his traces to simulate the effect and practice, so doesn't have tro fiddle with an additional tandem bar. Further: The tandem bar requires correct placing and harnessing, so that it doesn't hit the wheeler in the mouth, nor his knees nor the wheeler in his hocks, so is another piece of equipment needed which then can get in the way if not properly set up. It also adds a little extra weight which the wheeler has to carry on his neck. If done too heavy it ads more weight, if done to light, may break. All these are the downsides of the tandem bar. Nevertheless I do agree with Kathy and Jay that I too think tandem bars advantages if done correctly do outweigh their disadvantages, nevertheless, just to be complete in our understanding of the two systems I wanted to mention these details too.
