Hi Rick: We lived in Southern VT south of Wilmington for about seven years.
And I drove a pair for carriage and sleigh rides at our B&B. Just a couple
of thoughts. Prior to moving to VT I had only driven singles. Driving a
pair, they say, is easier than a pair. One horse tends to steady the other.
Probably true. That's all I drove in Vt and it was great fun and my pair
went quite well. But! Pleasure driving down the country road is a far cry
from a CDE dressage test that I'm doing now. Therefore I suggest that you
get them trained as singles and work then as singles as much as possible
because that is where you or your trainer can really teach them. As far as a
trainer goes I don't know anyone in your part of the state. In the
Woodstock=k area thee is Barbara Achey, a morgan trainer who trained one of
our guys years ago and there is Robin and Wilson Groves also in the same
area. Barbara is great. I would steer clear of Wilson Groves who nearly
ruined one of our horses and after the problem I contacted Lisa Singer, a
friend and a well known trainer and CDE competitor, and she said Newt you
should have called me first. Since then I have run into another person who
had a similar problem. I think Robin is OK but Wilson has a temper that
won't quit.. (This is why I didn't want to respond on the CD-L list.) Jeff
Morse is in western MA and worked with one of our horses. He is also great
Hope this is helpful and good luck. Pair driving is definitely the best!

Subject: [drivingpairs] Starting a new Morgan Pair this spring - Advice?

I have am NEW to pairs driving though I've been pleasure driving single
for many years.
I have a new pair of Morgan sisters, coming 4 and 5, that are untrained
except some basic barn manners.
I want to find someone to start them under saddle and driving as well as
get me started with them as a pair.
I'm looking for advice from this very knowledgeable audience on how to
approach this on a budget. What has worked best for you? Can you
recommend trainers?

Please help.
