PS I would never ask a horse to step over a pole and many poles are too high to step over. Again all to maintain the maximum control Harness the horses Lead the horses to their respective sides Pass the rein over and if just a pair, buckle and if someone is available, have them hold the reins with lite contact. I see so many times, available and competent people standing around and no one holding the darn reins. Connect coupling reins Buckle the pole strap and or neck yoke to the horses Walk to the rear of the first horse, hook first the outer trace Hook the inner tug/trace Same for other horse Climb in your vehicle and pause a bit so the horses get used to standing. (You don't want them taking off every time they feel weight getting into the cart) And most importantly before giving the command to start, first get the attention of both horses, then give the command to start and have them start / move off together.
