Fixed pole is nice since there is no weight on the horses, supporting the pole end. It is not suitable for rough ground, and will break if horses go thru steep ditches for example. Can't take the opposing forces of horses going up while carriage is still going down to cross the ditch. Usually attached to vehicle with a support and receiver under the tieboard. Vehicle must be heavy enough to anchor the leverage weight of long pole. Many small, lightweight, American vehicles cannot hold up the pole. This is where the buggy pole came into being. The modern equivelent is the sprung pole found on modern vehicles. Kind of a combination of both styles best features. Sprung pole supports itself, but will go up and down in a wide range to do ditches and hills. Minus is they are kind of ugly and only fit modern vehicles. Should be padded to avoid bruising horse, teaching him to stay off the pole, pulling crooked. Sometimes a horse has to hug the pole.
