Back a few years ago, When the LDS Church did their 150 years reenactment "Mormon Trail" wagon ride from Springfield, Illinois to Salt Lake City, I was privileged to drive one of the wagons on two different occasions. A large Conestoga type wagon pulled by three shire horses. it was equipped with a tounge for a tam but the trees were an off set evener for three horses. The lines were hooked to the outside horses with a strap snapped bit to bit from out side horses to the center one. similar to the way Dave indicated but gave more direct mouth to mouth control instead of hooked back to the hames ....
