Olive,
You should be using a neck yoke with a drop pole. If you don't, the weight
of the pole pulls the ponies together at the front. The length (measured
from attachment points) of the yoke is the same as the measurment of the
distance between mounting points of the single trees. With a proper length
neck yoke, you may only want a single caribiner (or short, heavy strap)
between yoke and collar.
