Thanks Sharon
I know it came out from Wales with the Payne family in 1862 – and my guess is
that possibly Philip Payne “whittled” it on the long and dreary (nearly 6
months) passage. That would have kept him from some idleness.
And I also know that the family did sell butter in the 1870’s. I’m now
wondering how long that press mark would last in our warmer climate.

Hi sue,
Certainly didn't look like any button press I have ever seen 😂. So a butter
press?
It looks to be woven the pattern is so intricate but that wouldn't work as too
hard to clean so I assume it is carved wood and is the stamp used on the pat of
butter after it has been pressed. Pretty cool.

I’ve just solved my own problem – it was misspelled and should be butter press!
Yay!!!
