Thanks for that, Rob. At least it confirms Margaret Mary's birth on Rottnest
Island in 1868. That's a good start. There was also a boy born on Rottnest
who died while still a baby/toddler. They brought him back to Fremantle for
burial and after that, Darby became an alcoholic. I found this entry in
Trove. Nothing like keeping things private back then, hey?
"The West Australian", Friday 13th Feb 1880
A pensioner named Darby Fahey committed
suicide at Fremantle on Monday last under the
following circumstances. He had been drink-
ing heavily for some days previously, and on
Saturday neglected to attend at his post at
the barracks. For this dereliction of duty he
was confined in a cell, with the view of his
being brought before the Commandant. When
the guard went to unlock his cell door on Mon-
day morning, he was found dead, having
hanged himself by means of a piece of whip-
cord attached to a bolt in the door. An inquest
was held on the body next day, when a verdict
of felo de se was returned.
Much appreciated,
Viv.
