First word, from Don:

Hello again, did you miss us? After all, it's been a whole
month since you heard from us last. :) I've thus far
received two direct deposits to my checking account from
the Social Security folks. It's like I got a raise and
I don't even have a job! I'm guessing it won't take me
long to get used to it but for now it's pretty exciting.
Our new house is coming along nicely. I'm sure it'll be
time to start on my part of it soon (everything inside
the house, including wiring and plumbing). Then I'm
really going to be busy. I sure hope the weather warms
up a little between now and then. I've been trying to
keep my over-sized posterior exclusively indoor as much
as possible for the past few weeks. My brother Bill
Lanoue, who lives in New York, called me a sissy and
started going on about single digit temperatures and
sub-zero chill factors but I just tuned him out. After
all, it's not my fault he hasn't moved to Texas yet.
Some folks just don't get it and trying to enlighten
them is just wasting your breath. I've explained to
him that while it's been far colder than I care to
be exposed to, no part of my anatomy has, thus far,
been frosted but he's got some sort of mondo macho
Eskimo mentality going on so he doesn't believe me.
Go figure Yankees. :)

We still haven't made our holiday phone calls yet.
Today I read (in a blog) about a lady who was hoping
to get her Christmas cards mailed and Christmas
lights taken down by Valentines day. Made me feel
slightly better.

We haven't been real busy on the Our Patch email
discussion group just lately but I've posted a few
links to some of the live recordings I've been
making with my band. You too can receive one or two
extra emails a month and hang out with me, Lisa and
several of our witty, intelligent, sociable and
charming web-siblings but only if you email us and
request to be added to the list.

See you next time,

Don

The Linux Corner.

When you decide to try Linux, the first thing you learn is
that you can download special files, called ISO files,
which can be used to create Linux CDs. The second thing
you learn is that Windows' built-in CD burning capability
can't burn ISO files. Fortunately, there are several
costless apps available for burning ISO files onto CDs.

At roughly two-year intervals Debian releases a new stable
version. Each version (distribution) of Debian is named
for a character in the movie Toy Story. When I started
using Debian stable, in 2005, the stable version was Sarge
(Debian 3.1). In 2007 Etch (Debian 4.0) became the stable
version and I upgraded. In 2009 Lenny (Debian 5.0) became
the stable version and I upgraded again. A few days from
now, on or about February the 5th, Squeeze (Debian 6.0)
will become the stable version of Debian and I will, of
course, upgrade yet again. I've read a lot of good things
about Squeeze and am looking forward to using it. Each
successive version of Debian has been a little more
user-friendly than the last. There are other distros I
use; Mepis, for example, is built on Debian and seems to
work really well on laptops while Slitaz is a tiny distro
(the ISO file is around 30 MB) that works extremely well
on older, slower hardware (totally rocks on a 500 MHz P3
w/256 MB of RAM), but Debian remains my first choice for
my laptop. http://www.debian.org/
Lisa, on the other hand, loves PCLinuxOS and I have to
admit, it's even more user-friendly that Debian while
also being more state-of-the-art (and a little less stable).
http://www.pclinuxos.com/

Our preferences notwithstanding, the world's most popular
Linux distribution is, and will likely continue to be,
Ubuntu. This is partly due to the excellent learning
facilities they provide for potential users.

A Little Humor.

From our web-sibling Jo-Ann Burton.

Three mischievous old Grandmas were sitting on a bench
outside a Nursing home when an old Grandpa walked by.
One of the ladies yelled, 'We bet we can tell exactly
how old you are.' The old man replied, 'There's no way
you can guess it, you old fools.'

'Sure we can! Just drop your pants and under shorts and
we can tell your exact age.'

Embarrassed but anxious to prove they couldn't do it, he
dropped his drawers. They asked him to turn around a
couple of times and jump up and down before they all
piped up and said, 'You're 87 years old!'

Standing with his pants down around his ankles, the old
gent asked, 'How in the world did you guess?'

Slapping their knees and grinning from ear to ear they
told him, 'We were at your birthday party yesterday!'

And, finally...

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy,
wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds,
and such that, I called the Suicide Hotline. I got a call

suicidal they got all excited and asked if I could drive

Last word, from Lisa:

The past month has been very rewarding. We've
been seeing the results of planning and preparation
in the startup of our new home. I started a Picasa
album and am photojournaling the construction to share
with friends and family.

http://bit.ly/gMVylR

We consider our readers friends and family and I
hope you will drop in from time to time to see
how we're doing. It will be fun to look back at
the details when the house is finished and we're
wondering 'How did we do that?'.

I love Google products as you all know and am knocked
out by the almost unlimited online storage provided by
Picasa and the other Google products. OK, there are
limits, but as of today you can have a maximum of
10,000 web albums with maximum of 1000 photos per
web album. That *should* be enough for my needs.
Another thing I'm doing is scanning all the important
documents pertaining to the ownership and construction
of the house, saving them as PDFs and uploading them
to Google Documents. Of course I'm saving all of
them in paper form, but if at any time I need a
document I can access it from anywhere with my
Google account or email it to the appropriate
person or office with Gmail. It may be helpful
in the future to have copies of original documents
in case the original is lost or destroyed.

http://bit.ly/ijvVua

As time permits, I'll do this with all of our
important documents. For those of you who may be
concerned about privacy, in my opinion privacy as
we once understood it is pretty much over, if it
ever existed at all, so that point is moot.

We're looking forward to this new year with
love, food and laughter. We wish the same for you.

'Til next time,

Lisa

The most important people on the Internet, for you and
I as computer users, are software developers. The world's
coolest computer, without software, is like a car without
fuel. It might look great, but what can it do?
It doesn't matter who produces the software you love
and use regularly, the developers of that software
need and deserve your support.

A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:

New computer users are often in awe of the things you can
get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden
costs for the unwary. Use a 'throw away' email address to
register, and be constantly on guard against giving away
personal information. Use a firewall, and provide only
the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.

The Internet: A Weapon of Mass Construction.
