First word, from Don:

Every year I remember at the last minute that April 1 is
also April Fools Day. Well, Lisa and I figure we're
foolish enough without deliberately aggravating the
condition and we despise so-called 'practical' jokes.
So, instead of ignoring the event this year I thought
I'd use this occasion to wish for all the fools in
the world to have a great day today and, for that
matter, every day.

---

I bought a coffee can full of hardware at a flea market a
couple of weeks ago. There was an old brooch pin in the
bottom of the can, amongst the nuts, bolts, screws, nails
and such. On the pin there's a raised shape which
neither I nor anyone I know can identify. Are you up for a
mystery? http://www.don-guitar.com/pni2/mystery_pin.jpg

Traffic has been slow in our email group of late but that's
one of the things I love about it. There's no frivolous
email inundating my inbox but when someone has something
to say they can be assured they'll soon receive thoughtful,
caring, intelligent responses. As always you're welcome
to join us but you can't simply subscribe; it's a closed
list so you'll have to drop us a line asking be added
and giving us the email address you'd like us to add.

I'm a voracious reader of Fantasy and Science Fiction
but I've rarely been able to afford new books. Back
when I had my own business I ran a paperback book
swap and haunted garage sales and flea markets to
keep myself in books. After I closed the business
times got pretty lean so I was thrilled to find
the Baen Free Library on the web...
http://www.baen.com/library/
...though it took me a while go get used to reading
books on my computer screen. Later, as my circumstances
improved I was able to get affordable used books via
the web. http://www.paperbackswap.com/index.php
By now I've usually got at least a half dozen book
credits accumulated with paperbackswap so I've been
trying new authors. The web has been as much of a
boon to writers as it has to readers. There are
numerous sites which offer resources for writers
and, recently, sites which enable writers to pool
their energies and talents in collaborative works.
A few days ago I finished one such book, entitled
'Dogs and Goddesses' which was written by Jennifer
Crusie, Anne Stuart and Lani Diane Rich.
http://dogsandgoddesses.com/homepage.php
This fun little novel has made me an instant believer
in collaborative book writing. I'll be looking for
other works by these ladies.

Last word, from Lisa:

The last two weeks have whizzed by as usual,
probably for you folks, too. Had my almost-annual
bout with bronchitis and am recovering nicely after
sleeping the better (?) part of a week, and getting
some of those lovely antibiotics.

Still missing my lovely old dog and feeling the
sadness (and the freedom) of being petless. It's
an odd feeling, first time I haven't had a pet in
my life. We've decided that at least for awhile
we'd try out this new state of being. Our friends
are probably out there taking bets....

'Til next time,

Lisa

The most important people on the Internet, for you and
I as computer users, are software developers. The world's
coolest computer, without software, is like a car without
fuel. It might look great, but what can it do?
It doesn't matter who produces the software you love
and use regularly, the developers of that software
need and deserve your support.

A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:

New computer users are often in awe of the things you can
get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden
costs for the unwary. Use a 'throw away' email address to
register, and be constantly on guard against giving away
personal information. Use a firewall, and provide only
the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.

The Internet: A Weapon of Mass Construction.
