#129 November 15, 2009 from http://www.don-guitar.com Online version: http://www.don-guitar.com/currentissue.html Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/donspatch/ First word, from Don: With Google Voice giving us incredibly affordable long distance telephone service (free in the US and Canada and very inexpensive throughout most of the world) we're looking forward to making holiday phone calls this year. If you'd like to receive a holiday phone call from us, please send us an email and include your telephone number. We'll get back with you to set up an appointment for the call. Lisa and I seem to have established what I've heard called a 'Brush Fire' lifestyle. It wasn't deliberate, it just sort of crept up on us but it seems to suit us. There are times when it's stressful but mostly we have a lot of fun. I remember a little poem I heard once. When in trouble or in doubt run in circles scream and shout. I still smile when I remember this because it's not so far off the mark. Sometimes we do run in circles, screaming and shouting, but in the end we get with the program and solve the problem. Life is good, love is wonderful and, so far, the challenging moments haven't been so bad. Bring it on. A young Jewish fellow from San Francisco (CA) asked, on Aardvark, where he could meet a nice Jewish girl. I replied: On the incredibly small chance that you aren't kidding, here are a few Jewish singles sites. http://www.jpeoplemeet.com/ http://www.jdate.com/ http://www.jewishmingle.com/ http://www.jsingles.com/ http://www.jewishcafe.com/index.jsp http://jewishamericansingles.com/ http://jsoulmate.com/ http://nicejewish.com/ http://www.singlejew.com/ http://www.yjew.com/ http://www.frumster.com/ http://www.worldofsingles.com/ http://www.jewishmatch.com/ http://www.jswsn.org/ http://www.jewishandsingle.com/ http://www.spiritjewishsingles.com/ If you have no luck with these, try this annual Jewish singles party. http://sanfrancisco.letmypeoplego.com/jewish-singles.html If that's a bust, do some volunteer work for the Jewish Community Relations Council of San Francisco; there's bound to be some single Jewish women there. Incidentally I love the nickname they've given themselves. Nobody does Jewish humor better than Jews. http://oybay.wordpress.com/ I get a nifty little magazine named 'Remedy' every so often which is chock full of useful health information. It's full of advertising but that's offset by the fact that it doesn't cost anything. 'Unix was not designed to stop people from doing stupid things, because that would also stop them from doing clever things.' - Doug Gwyn 'Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.' - Rich Cook 'True research is like fumbling in the dark for the right switches. Once you've turned the light on everyone can see.' - unknown 'An idiot with a computer is a faster, better idiot' - Rich Julius 'Beware of bugs in the above code; I have only proved it correct, not tried it.' - Donald Knuth 'C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg.' - Bjarne Stroustrup 'I've never met a human being who would want to read 17,000 pages of documentation, and if there was, I'd kill him to get him out of the gene pool.' - Joseph Costello, President of Cadence 'The primary purpose of the DATA statement is to give names to constants; instead of referring to pi as 3.141592653589793 at every appearance, the variable pi can be given that value with a DATA statement and used instead of the longer form of the constant. This also simplifies modifying the program, should the value of pi change.' - FORTRAN manual for Xerox computers 'The use of COBOL cripples the mind; its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offence.'- E. W. Dijkstra 'It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to students that [sic] have had prior exposure to BASIC; as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration.' - E. W. Dijkstra 'A system admin's life is a sorry one. The only advantage he has over Emergency Room doctors is that malpractice suits are rare. On the other hand, ER doctors never have to deal with patients installing new versions of their own innards!' - Michael O'Brien 'The C Programming Language is a language which combines the flexibility of assembly language with the power of assembly language.' 'Pascal is a programming language named after a man who would turn over in his grave if he knew about it.' Last word, from Lisa: I used to think bad luck came in threes. Well, it's not so. The past week ganged up on us and smacked us on the chin. No one thing was really devastating, but one of those weeks where we simply were stymied at every turn. One by one, we tackled and solved the dilemmas and are headed into a busy, yet relaxing weekend. Through it all, we settled down in the evenings, de-stressed by surfing the web for links we found to share, and spent some time writing the ezine. We finished the week the same way you eat an elephant (one bite at a time). The world's coolest computer, without software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what can it do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and use regularly, the developers of that software need and deserve your support. A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox: New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a 'throw away' email address to register, and be constantly on guard against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires. ___________________________________________________________ Subscription management for this publication is available online here: http://www.don-guitar.com/subsmanager.html or here: //www.freelists.org/list/donspatch
