Don's Patch Issue #2005-06-01 from http://www.don-guitar.com

Anyone who actually pays any attention to my subscriber count
will notice that it went down a little for this issue but I have no
fewer readers. I've been unable to figure out how to persuade
freelist's automated list handling system to delete addresses
which have gone bad (i.e. which bounce every time and come
back with a "no such address" message attached). Each time
I post the ezine freelists forwards all the bounce messages and
I save them as text files. A few days ago I went through them,
sorted out the "for sure" bad addresses and manually deleted
them all from the list. I like the fact that my subscriber base
is slowly growing even though I've done nothing at all to promote
this publication. I'm neither a promoter nor a marketer, I'm a
geek, and this publication is about my love of the web which has
changed my life in so many ways.

Remember, your input is always welcome. I value your suggestions
and comments, and I'm always willing to help you find answers to
your computer and Internet questions.

In the last issue I asked about the origin of the word "chick" used
to refer to a young woman. My own thought was that it might be
based on the Yiddish work "shiksa". Ken, a reader from San
Francisco, suggested I pose my question to Michael Quinion.
http://www.worldwidewords.org/
I did so (thanks Ken) and Michael responded:
"Alas, no. It's the same word as that for a young chicken."
While awaiting Michael's reply, I did some research on
commonly used Yiddish and/or Hebrew words.

============== Humor =============

I've been very happily married for just over a month now so
I know it's a "doable" thing but I know it isn't an easy thing
to accomplish and there are cynics everywhere.

=================================

I forcibly restrained myself for this issue. The last issue
was just slightly over 30k in size and that caused a lot of
extra bounces (many email providers limit received posts
to 30k in size). This one should be just under the wire.
I ran out of space before I ran out of links (as always) but
that's ok. I like having a head start on the next issue.

See you next time.

The most important people on the Internet, for you and I as computer
users, are software developers. The world's coolest computer, without
software, is like a car without fuel. It might look great, but what
can it do? It doesn't matter who produces the software you love and
use regularly, the developers of that software need your support.

A bit of advice from Internet veteran Bayard J. Fox:

New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without
cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a
"throw away" email address to register, and be constantly on guard
against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide
only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires.
