For what it is worth, I tried the MathJax plugin recently and am
pretty happy with it. Some of its advantages are
* backup friendly
* pages with math formulas can be backed up as normal pages
* formulas are not converted to images
* so parts of the formula can be highlighted with a mouse!
* uses CDNJS
The fact that it requires a lot of dependencies was irrelevant as I
installed it using the "Extension Manager". The whole process took
just a couple of clicks.
4) $ on other pages is interpreted as math
This is not an issue either. You can escape the dollar symbols. See for example
http://www.kamaraju.xyz/dk/playground/dollar_symbol
Here is a page with math equations in my wiki
http://www.kamaraju.xyz/dk/math . It may not be as fast as pages with
no math formulas but it is not terribly slow either.
