[dokuwiki] Has there been a recent change would affect symbolic links in installation?

I use symbolic links from the <doku>/lib/tpl and <doku>/lib/plugins
directories to point at locally modified templates and plugins.

This suddenly seems to have stopped working, e.g. my tpl directory
has:-

    drwxrwxr-x+ 5 chris chris 4096 Dec  6 22:00 dokuwiki
    -rw-rw-r--+ 1 chris chris 2084 Jul  3  2016 index.php
    lrwxrwxrwx  1 chris chris   22 Jan  2 10:09 roundbox ->
../../dev/tpl/roundbox

but the admin configuration shows only the dokuwiki template and says
"no other choices available".

Is this as it should be?  Should symbolic links be ignored?
