[dokuwiki] Access to acronym array within template

I am writing a function inside my template in which I need to determine if a
word is an acronym. In digging through the API, I found an acronym function
in xhtml.php that references an acronyms array. How would I go about
accessing this associative array from within my template? Forgive my
ignorance, but I am a novice php programmer.
