[directmusic] Volume progression

What is the formula for creating a linear sounding volume progression?

If I try to do it linearly from 0L (maximum volume) to -9600L (minimum
volume) it cuts out way too fast.  I have tried various exponential scales,
but I don?t think I am using the correct one.
