It appears that the Hoffman brothers (Brian and Eric -- guitars) have been fired from Deicide. While I understand the given reasons behind this (detrimental drug use, easily distracted from the band by homelife, excessive show cancellations, etc.), I still cannot shake the feeling that it is all wrong. Maybe its because Brian and Eric have been in the band from the beginning. They formed the band, back when it was called Amon. They, with Steve Ashiem (drummer), hired Glen Benton (vocals), for hell's sake. Though I can relate to Benton and Ashiem's reasons for giving the Hoffmans the boot, it just isn't Deicide without them. It really and truly isn't, just as it wouldn't be without Benton or Ashiem.

When the latest Deicide album was released, I was smitten. No more rushed releases to finish the horrible contract with Roadrunner. No more bullshit garage demo quality. No more filler. Scars of the Crucifix was a top-notch Deicide release just brimming with sheer blasphemy and pure evil. The excitement I held upon hearing this release was indescribable. One of my all-time favorite bands, within the death metal genre and beyond, was wholly and truly back. Now, its all ruined. Sure, the new line up containing members of Vital Remains will produce an incredible album, but without the Hoffmans, it is not Deicide. "Deicide's Remains," I'll call it. I'll surely buy it, listen to it, and if past VR material is any sign, I'll love it -- but I will not call it Deicide.
