Your statement was "Any changes we make to the marketplace is, I feel, going to
reduce the value the marketplace offers to the attendees."
This implies there are no issues. We have to make changes to address the
issues, they aren't just going to go way.

Subject: [DGM Committee] Re: Marketplace
I've never assumed there aren't issues. I agree that the edge cases need to be
addressed. I just don't see how any of the things we've come up with address
the edge cases. I think there will always be those kind of issues. I think we
are better served making it clear how we are addressing those special case
items than we are doing things that make the good intent cases less appealing.

Carl, your points are valid for the good intent case. The problems we have are
not with the perfect case. The problems we have are the edge cases. In the
old days people brought their games for DGM they sold them themselves and then
took them with them when they left DGM so the situation was very hands off. We
have folks leaving their games there for a very long time, like years. We are
somewhat responsible for what happens to them, especially since we have no
signed agreement with them. If they are stolen or damaged we could be liable.
We have people abandoning their games and we have games at unreasonable prices
sitting there that will most likely never sell but they use up space.
You say it's little effort, that is just not true. The effort of maintaining
the marketplace is non-zero. We have to maintain the cleanliness of the area,
we have to maintain the connection between the game and the person. We have to
manage the money. We have money that has been sitting in the box for a long
time. Randy got an IOU for one of his games because it's not being managed.
Jim Carroll bought a game missing parts and has no redress. We either need to
return it to the original way it was where people only leave their games while
they are there, or we need to manage it better. Carl, if you want to step up
and manage the marketplace and all that comes with it, we'll let you run with
it. Someone needs to step up and take ownership of all the processes and solve
the issues we're having.
Having a small payment to keep people from just using us as free storage
doesn't seem that unreasonable. Add a $1 to your games price if you don't want
to pass it through.
We also have a cash flow problem. Keeping these doors open is expensive as
hell. I've put in $2500 of my own money so far in the last 30 days with little
to show for it. There isn't enough in the bank to fully reimburse me now and
our rent for February at the moment, so any ideas for helping with revenue are
needed. This may not be the best option for the marketplace and it's ok to
have a debate but to assume everything is working fine and there are no issues
is not ok.

Subject: [DGM Committee] Re: Additional items for discussion...This does not
include with maybe 1 or 2 items the first list
There's a lot to address there but I'm just going to talk about one of those,
the Marketplace.
We have, what I feel, is a very real problem with competing with Madness and
home groups for attendance. We have to have reasons for people to want to spend
the money they wouldn't otherwise have to, to come to DGM. I believe that the
marketplace is one of those reasons and a fairly strong one. It offers value to
the attendees with very little cost and effort to us. I see the value it adds
to someone's membership as a much stronger asset to us than whatever minimal
amount of money we could earn from it.
That all leads me to say that I think we need to be as hands off on the
marketplace as possible. In the past, when changes were made to the marketplace
it did nothing but anger people who were using it. I can tell you that, as a
user, taking my games off the shelf just because they were there for a few
months pissed me off. I've had many games sell after they were in the
marketplace for a long time. There are a myriad number of reasons why games
aren't just stagnating on the shelf. We get new people all the time in which
the marketplace is brand new to them. Sometimes people might see a game on the
shelf for a while then end up playing it or read about it somewhere else and
suddenly the game becomes interesting to them when it wasn't before. I can
personally attest that these things really do happen and frequently enough that
we shouldn't discount them. Unless we are running out of shelf space I don't
think we need to ever take games off of the shelves.
Any changes we make to the marketplace is, I feel, going to reduce the value
the marketplace offers to the attendees. I don't think we want to do that.
Plus, I believe that we could use the manpower that would be put into the
market somewhere else where we add value to the DGM rather than reduce it.
That's just my $0.02 as someone who sees the marketplace from both sides of the
coin.
