Meet Our Grantees - Paul Grant
What is Penn Branch to you, other than a neighborhood?
"Penn Branch is an outstanding community of people. Since, my wife and I
moved here in 2012, we have made many incredible friendships. So, many of
our neighbors have become like family to us. There is a closeness here that
you would not expect living in the city. We look out for each other’s
children, we even know each our neighbor’s dogs. It’s not uncommon to spend
one part of your weekend hanging out at one neighbor’s backyard cookout and
then the next evening you are having a drink on someone else’s patio. Ten
years later, that closeness feels like something from another era - or
1950s television series."
What inspired you to seek this grant and design this program?
"When, I first moved into Penn Branch in 2012, I quickly noticed how many
retired African Americans lived here. They were still very much engaged in
Penn Branch community activities. I lost both of my parents to chronic
illnesses while I was in my early 20s. So, it was heartwarming for me to
see that many seniors in this neighborhood were thriving. I had never
experienced that level of civic engagement while living anywhere else. They
reached out to us. They stopped to talk when they saw us outside. As I got
to know more of the community, I learned how accomplished many of these
same neighbors had been professionally. I was amazed by the stories from
those who were among the first generation of African Americans to integrate
this community during the early 1960's and the few white families who moved
here before them and remained throughout the decades of racial and
demographic changes. I just really wanted to share their stories."
What was your vision for this event and how do you see it affecting your
Penn Branch?
"I hope this project helps us to better understand and discuss how
Washington, DC communities have evolved over time. I also hope it
highlights that there remains strong traditions of Black home ownership,
and a thriving middle-class, east of the river. It’s just not talked about
as much."

‘We Are Penn Branch’ is an oral history project that seeks to document the
personal narratives of the first generation of African Americans who
integrated Penn Branch, a neighborhood of approximately 550 single- family
homes in Southeast Washington, DC (Ward 7). It will focus on long-time
residents who purchased their home in Penn Branch between 1960-1968,
pivotal years of the Civil Right Movement and in U.S. housing and urban
policies. The interviews will be filmed with a single broadcast quality, 4K
camera and also ENG audio field recorders. Visually, each interview will
feature a stylized portrait (or framing) of the participant seated in the
front exterior of their residence.

In the social movements of the recent past, youth artist-activists in the
District of Columbia have had a profound influence on the bending of the
arc of justice. Due to the District’s unique role as the nation’s capital,
protests – many led by young people from DC – and their artistic
contributions have a dual impact: these young activists’ endeavors comment
on local challenges in the District (housing, violence, education,
homelessness, and more) while also standing on the front lines of global
movements and appearing in national media – all right here in their own
community.
This program was created and will be moderated by Humanitini Curator Grant
Recipient, Jordan Campbell. Panelists include Fly Zyah, Lauryn Renford,
Jonathan B. Tucker, and Jade Jones.
In this workshop, attendees will
- Explore what makes for a good oral history question
- Work through anxieties and hesitations about asking certain kinds of
questions
- Brainstorm strategies for navigating difficult interview scenarios
- Develop a stronger list of oral history questions that help prompt the
kinds of stories and reflections interviewers look for
Anna F. Kaplan, PhD, is an independent historian and oral historian whose
work focuses on issues of race, memory, and historical narratives. She has
worked on oral history projects with the Archives of American Art, the
National Park Service, and local community projects throughout Washington,
DC.

Her current projects include a book manuscript about the memory of the
University of Mississippi’s desegregation and a research project on Black
women’s labors in establishing oral history programs or centers in the US.
She also teaches courses on US history and oral history at American
University and UDC. This past year she published the article “Cultivating
Supports while Venturing into Interviewing During COVID-19” and organized
the virtual panel “In Our Own Words: Deaf Perspectives in Oral History and
Public History.” Anna also serves as the Vice President of Oral History in
the Mid-Atlantic Region and Co-Chair of the Oral History Association’s
Diversity Committee.

fourteen years. She has served as Operations Manager and has managed Human
Resources as well as most everything in-between. Stephanie will be missed
for her commitment to our mission and her outstanding sense of humanity.

Tracey Mullery has served as a Grants Coordinator for HumanitiesDC for
nearly two years. Recently she was inspired to direct her career toward
serving in the procurement of community development and housing for
underserved residents. Tracey will be missed for her joyous personality and
commitment to her work. Thank you Tracey for being a very important par of
HumanitiesDC.
