*Anybody who knows me, knows that I am a hip-hop fiend, having hosted DC's
still unrivaled hip-show "The Underground Sound" many years back on DC's
WPFW radio. I cut my teeth on youth development working with underserved
youth from DC to Baltimore, was a fatherhood counselor and engaged in a
prison outreach program that visited Lorton, CTF, Jessup, Oak Hill, Cedar
Knoll and DC Jail. I ran a city-wide youth violence prevention program
("Circle of Hope") and created two organizations still alive today, the DC
Youth Advisory Council and the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates. For the
last eight + years my focus has been on building community health in such a
way that it brings attention to the health plight of Black and Brown
communities, and to hold those with budgets and legislative authority
accountable or give praise when it is due. You could say that I am God's
little builder. I seek to be as balanced as I can in my approach and I am
very careful not to personally attack anyone, but only to praise or
criticize policy actions, especially if it adversely affects my community.
But there does come a point where I get a little pissed off. I'm still a
hip-hop fiend though....*

*Our healthcare system is teetering on the edge of collapse and Black and
Brown residents are caught in the crosshairs. The blame game is in full
effect and genuine solutions that seek consensus and don't require
capitulation and ass-kissing are hard to come by. True leadership first
requires humility, then a willingness to take responsibility, make
sacrifices, listen attentively to other points of view, follow the law or
seek to change it if the law is unjust. All of these are missing in this
"fiasco."*
*The Health Alliance Network filed a formal discrimination complaint aginst
MedStar Health on September 10th with the US Depaartment of Health and
Human Services Ofice for Civil Rights (see atached). We are now
considering filing a formal FOIA request for the MedStar Health's
Certificates of Need filed with DC Health to review if MedStar Health
violated ANY commitments made to serve DC residents.*
*ANNOUNCEMENT:*
*The Health Alliance Network, with its partners that joined in the HHS
complaint, will hold a Press Conference on Monday, September 20th at 2:00
pm on the steps of the John Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
DC. We will discuss our formal complaint, suggestions for solutions and
next steps. You are all welcome and encouraged to attend.*
