Dear neighbors,
We are grateful for your support and advocacy for Deanwood Library. Since
2019, our small but mighty group of neighbors has:
- Formed the Friends of Deanwood Library and joined the Federation of
Friends of DC Public Library;
- Engaged in community outreach at DCPL's Sing, Talk, and Read Family
Festival in 2019, and Rooting DC in 2020;
- Supported numerous programs in partnership with Deanwood Library and
Deanwood Recreation Center, including reimbursing librarians for snacks and
supplies purchased out of pocket;
- Co-organized a series of virtual Community Conversations while the
library was closed earlier in the pandemic, culminating with a discussion
on the Smithsonian Men of Change Exhibit for Black History Month 2021;
- Co-organized a community meet and greet with library staff to
celebrate Deanwood Library's reopening in the spring of 2021;
- Testified before the DC Council in support of HVAC repairs to Deanwood
Library and Recreation Center ($210,000 awarded in the city budget in 2020,
and library HVAC unit replaced in early 2021);
- Testified before the DC Council in support of funding for a full-size,
full-service Deanwood Library ($24 million awarded for this project in
2021, the multi-year project will begin in 2022);
- Partnered with IDEA Public Charter School's carpentry program to build
two Little Free Libraries for the Deanwood community in 2021. Friends of
Deanwood Library covered material costs and provided stipends to the
carpentry students;
- Worked with neighbors, ANC commissioners, and community leaders to
halt the proposed demolition of the Deanwood Library Kiosk, and investigate
opportunities for repairing and repurposing the site for community use
(this effort is ongoing).
This holiday season, we invite you to support Friends of Deanwood Library's
fundraiser. All funds raised go directly toward supporting library programs
and historical/educational displays, providing snacks for youth who visit
the library after school and participate in programs, and building more
Little Free Libraries throughout Deanwood in partnership with IDEA.
