Greetings Washingtonians,
I'm excited to share with you the first 2022 edition of the Serve DC
Newsletter. My name is Alexis L. Squire and I have the privilege of serving
under the leadership of Mayor Muriel Bowser as the Director and Chief
Service Officer at the Mayor's Office of Volunteerism and Partnerships,
also known as Serve DC. My team is dedicated to connecting people to
purpose through volunteerism, service, and partnerships and my hope is
you’ll see evidence of this mission below.
We had a busy start to the year at Serve DC! Coming off the heels of a
season of giving and activations, this month we honored our dedicated
volunteers with a little Vol-entine's Day appreciation celebration.
We also took time to honor and celebrate Black History Month. From joining
in the inaugural Frederick Douglass Dialogues hosted by #DouglassWeek, to
highlighting innovative ways to recruit volunteers of color and bolster
volunteer equity in the District, my team and I are proud to advance Mayor
Bowser’s commitment of amplifying Black voices and service.
I also had the pleasure of representing our city and agency’s work at the
recent national leadership convening of America’s Service Commissions
(ASC). There I got to share and learn more about creating pathways for
accessible and equitable volunteerism with state and federal partners.

*Happy Vol-entine's Day with Safeway! *
On February 16th, *Serve DC, the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs
(MOCA), and the Mayor's Office on Women's Policy and Initiatives (MOWPI),*
in partnership with *Safeway,* showed appreciation for the over 2,000
volunteers who activated around the District’s response to COVID-19.
Volunteers stopped by the Capitol Hill Safeway and were gifted tokens of
appreciation donated by our partner *Safeway*, including flowers, cupcakes,
and COVID-19 booster shots. In the words of one volunteer, “it helps when
businesses get involved.” Serve DC staff were also on-site to share
additional ways to stay involved in the community through service.* Check

America’s Service Commission, a nonprofit dedicated to advocating and
assisting state service commissions with AmeriCorps programming. She met
