We're gearing up to support our 50 partners who need thousands of new
volunteer tutors and mentors.
Can You Help Us with Outreach?
DCTMI is gearing up for a summer push to get new volunteer tutors and
mentors to help young people in DC. We need your help with outreach to
sign people up. We will be tabling or canvassing at farmers markets,
outdoor free movie nights, and outdoor festivals from now through the
summer and early fall. Would you be willing to join us?
To make this volunteer work more satisfying, we are building *TEAMS of 3-6
people* who get to know each other, learn from one another, and commit to
helping with outreach at least once a month. For people who want to make a
bigger impact, *we will be hiring a few paid TEAM ORGANIZERS*.

*Want to see us in action? Meet us for an hour between 10 and noon at
either Eastern Market Farmers Market (Saturday) or Dupont Circle Farmers
Market (Sunday)*. Please drop me an email at tom@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or
text (301-325-3141) if you can make it.
It's a great way to sharpen your communication and leadership skills, build
lasting friendships, AND help us make a better world for the 2 out of 3 DC
kids -- more than 60,000 -- who need extra support. (We also have
nonprofit partners in the surrounding Maryland and Virginia counties that
need volunteers and we will be doing outreach there, too.)
More broadly, it’s a way to help us build the civic movement we need. A
strong democracy requires a foundation of empathy and a sense of
responsibility for one another, for our community as a whole, and for
future generations. As Michelle Obama put it, empathy is "not just
feeling, but doing; not just for ourselves or our kids, but for everyone,
for all our kids." That's what we're trying to do at DCTMI.
Meet Our Team Organizers We are still recruiting more organizers but we'd
like to introduce you to our core group-- Mei, Adrian, and Adam!
Mei Tomko has worked as an intern with DCTMI since September 2020. She is
a Pennsylvania native and DC transplant and is one of the most civically
engaged people I know. She attends American University where she studies
International Relations. In her free time she enjoys drawing, cafe hopping,
and listening to podcasts!

Adrian Russell is originally from North Carolina and is a former AmeriCorps
VISTA and VISTA Leader. He works in the Community Development Finance field
and his interests include reading, hiking, comedy, and art.
Adam Shames is a professional workshop leader, facilitator, community
builder, writer and musician. He is the founder of the Kreativity Network,
has a master’s degree in education from Stanford, was a former “Teacher of
the Year,” and can sometimes be found leading a group with a guitar in hand.
