Omar!
Working with the 02r 96 is a breeze!!!
No more difficult than using an analog mixer.
So you're connecting your motif to your mixer and your mixer is connected to your Edirol if I understand?
Then you're using two sets of analog preamps.
Did you try connecting your motif directly to your FA 66 and if so, did you find any difference?
The MOTU 2408 interface is completely accessible with Jaws.
Do you have a Skype account, if so give me your skype name and I'll give you a ring.

Hi Jean,

lol First, hats off to you for using the yamaha o2r? I know it's an
all-digital mixer, and I personally would never have the patience to work
with that type of a unit. Second, I have the keyboard running into the
mixer, and not the soundcard. Finally, is the Motu 2408's interface
accessible with jaws?

Thanks for your help.

Hey Omar!
Sorry, I'm not too familiar with this audio interface!
I just had a quick look at it on the web and it sounds OK for the price...
I'm using the MOTU 2408 system and I can't find any difference between the
recorded sound of my Motif and the keyboard sound.
My mixer is a Yamaha 02r using the fiber optic wires to connect to my MOTU
interface.
And the preamps on the 02r are very good.
The MOTU interface is, on the other hand, quite a bit more expensive than
the Edirol FA66 !
Are you connecting your Motif directly to the FA 66 or is it going thru your
mixer?

Omar!
I think you said that you're using an Allen and Heath mixer?
Don't know which model you have but I once had a GS3 model and it sounded
very good.
What kind of sound card do you have to link the mixer to your computer?

Well here's the thing with that...When playing it through my monitors,
the
Motif sounds great, but once i record that midi track into audio, that's
when it seems to lose some of it's fatness, and even volume becomes an
issue. For example, i know the limit is -0.1, and if i compare a soft
synth's audio track sound at -0.1 to that of the motif, the softsynth is
louder.

Hi,

Before spending any more cash, how about plugging the synth into a hi
fi
amp
and checking what kind of tone you get? If it's very different, then
start
analysing your recording environment to see where the fault could be.
If
it
sounds the same, then that's the sound the synth actually makes and
you'll
need to learn to tweak the preset to your tastes or, in extremis, trade
the
synth in for something you like more.

BTW, if you try the hi fi experiment, be careful about turning up the
volume
too high, especially if you play bass notes - your hi fi speakers might
not
take it.

Best wishes.

Right. I don't feel the sound is as fat as it should be. Can you tell
me
which motu model is accessible to us?

Thanks.

Yes. Are you experiencing some audio issues then or, is it that you
don't think the sound your getting back in Sonar is as fat as it should
be?

Phil replied: I wouldn't say that it's a problem.
Having said that, I would have thought that it's possible that
replacing
your current sound card with something else such as a MOTU may help
although, I kind of question that a bit, as your only using the line
ins
on
that card. I am assuming that your recording at 44.1, 24 bit? Sean,
Tim,
anyone. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't have thought so. They
are nice mixers and the sound that you track with, should have a bit of
warmth to it, as your using an analog mixer.

I have an alan and heath mix
wizard 3, which has gotten pretty high reviews. I'm just wondering
though
if
you actually lose a bit of quality when converting midi of an external
synth
to audio, as opposed to when just bouncing or freezing a vst synth?

Yes. Mind you, I
don't know which mixer you have so, can't comment on whether it has
excellent pree-amps or, not.

Phil, when
you say pre amps, do you mean external ones besides the actual ones
within
the mixer that I am using?

Thanks.

Hmm,
maybe as your keeping all of your software synthes/samples internal to
Sonar. On the other hand, if you had some really hi end pree-amps that
you
could use with your hardware then, you would find that your hardware
would
sound fatter and have more detail too!

Hello,

I notice when I use vsts, or samples via the sfz in sonar, I actually
get
fatter, warmer, and louder recordings than when using tracks from an
external synth like the motif. Is this generally the case, or am I
imagining
things here.
