install Sonar 8 before upgrading to 8.5, and will be required to leave 8.0
on their system. That really annoyed me, and I didn't realize that was how
things would be until I'd already paid for the download version.

Phil replied: not quite, smile. if you already have Sonar 8.31 installed
then, you could simply install Sonar 8.5 then, you could remove the Sonar
8.31 installation. Note, when removing Sonar 8.31, remember to not "remove
shared files as you could inadvertently remove some components that were not
available in the Sonar 8.5 downloadable installer.

Bryan wrote: Of course, I knew that the download version wouldn't include
media or shipping, but it is customary for the data to be the same. I didn't
know that the download version is a different installer than what I would
receive on DVD.

Phil replied: they kept the downloadable installer smaller because some
users have a cap on bandwidth. For example, over here in the UK, a lot of
people have broadband packages with a band width cap.

Bryan wrote: Anyone purchasing a new copy of Sonar 8.5 will be able to
install from scratch.

Phil replied: true, and the reason for not packaging all of the content with
the downloadable product is that you already have Dimension Pro, Beatscape
etc on your Sonar 8 DVD set hence, them offering the cheaper download option
to customers.

Bryan wrote: I'm also told that it is possible to purchase an upgrade from
the 8.5 download to the full product from the Cakewalk store, but I haven't
checked on that yet. I will, though, as installing and upgrading 8.0 takes a
lot of time.

Phil replied: if you install Sonar 8.5 from scratch then, it will still take
you quite a long time as you may want to install all of the DVD's such as
Dimension Pro, beatscape etc.

Bryan wrote: For those of you that haven't purchased the Sonar 8.5 upgrade
yet, pay the little bit extra to get DVDs containing the full 8.5 installer.

Phil replied: on the other hand, you could save some cash and just go for
the download, install it then, uninstall Sonar 8.31 and you would hend up
with the same result.
