Hi Richard. My advice would be to check out the Vox Tonelab or Tonelab SE amp modellers. One is a desktop unit with analog and digital outs, the other is a floorboard type unit with analog outs, but more amps and effects included. Both use an actual tube to help simulate warm poweramp distortion, and both are very user-friendly for us. i.e. lots of dedicated knobs to turn, and the PC software for editing/saving preset sounds is accessible.

They sound very convincing through a PA or mixer.
Also, the Line6 POD XT (available as a desktop unit, wrack unit, or pedalboard) is also quite popular, and has dozens of amps, cabinets, and effects that it emulates.

The best thing to do would be to try out these things in a local shop, and hopefully, try them at home for a week with the option to return what you don't like. There is a real learning curve when using these things, just because of the shere number of amps, speaker cabinets, and effects they model.
Chris
