Honestly, I didn't hear the mix at all. The composer/flautist said that he
doesn't have access to the master tracks. I don't know how many songs are of
concern but the flute's being too low in the mix is the only mentioned
concerned. Given the timbre and range of the flute, it would seem likely that
some software could isolate the flute (to some degree), increase the volume of
that which would be isolated, and then mix it back into the original stereo mix.
I wil see if I can het a listen to the final mix or mixes, because it sounds
like it could be easier to just re-record rather than going through the
learning curve of some editing software.

Audacity has a 'vocal reduction or isolate and isolation' which relies on
some EQ and the vocal being centered in the mix. Audacity also seems to be
very accessible in that you can do everything you need to using the menus and
dialogs as long as you don't need to select partial areas, in which case, it
might work for vocals.
What kind of piece is this? How complicated is the flute part? How about
just doing the flute part again on top?

Does anyone know of any accessible software whith which one can isolate
vocals or any particular instrument from within a stereo mix. I realize that
any such software does not work one hundred percent. Although I did not hear
any of the mix (I think the mix would be suspect), I was going to suggest that
the composer simply re-record the project, but I didn't want to appear
insulting. Apparently, when the recording was done, the flute was not loud
enough in the mix. Needless to say, the artist does not have the multi-tracks
to do a remix (tisk tisk).
There is a program called XTRAX Stems by Audionamix, as well as another
called R-Mix by Roland, but I'm willing to bet that these are not accessible.
If anyone has any ideas, let me know.
