Another thing that could be done is that someone might be able to export the presets to a file if the plug-in allows it. He could then bring them back; it might be a bit easier than having to reinstall the plug-in.

You mean list of presets, not list of effects. You are inside an effect plug-in, a compressor in this case, and going up and down a list of presets.

If it's a stock preset that came with the plug-in, you should be able to get it back by reinstalling the plug-in. But, if it's one you created, it's gone and you will have to create it again by manipulating the plug-ins parameters.
