There are lots of editions of Windows 7, but for most people, only a few are available. Windows 7 Starter is only available in some special situations, is only available from OEMs, and has lots of limitations that musicians wouldn't like. Windows 7 Home Basic isn't generally available in most western countries, and has some memory and processor limitations that wouldn't appeal generally, either. Windows 7 Enterprise is almost the same as Windows 2008 Server, and has many domain features that people here wouldn't care about. So, the only real choice is between Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. Home Premium is generally what most people should get. So, unless you have a special need, get Home Premium. If you plan to use more than 8GB of memory, then you'll need Professional, however there is hardly anything that you can do with Sonar right now that could use more than 8GB. Professional can connect to a Windows domain, but no one at home on a DAW will ever need those features. If you need the XP emulation mode, and don't want to buy your own virtual machine software separately, then you'll need Professional. As Tim says, though, you'll also need to pay to upgrade your Jaws license to Jaws Professional, in order to use Windows 7 Professional. Most people here will never need Ultimate on a DAW. Unless you plan to use a quad processor system, or install more than 16GB of memory, then there is no need. Its other security features, such as drive encryption, would seriously slow down a DAW's operation, so are useless to us. Most people, then, will get Home Premium, with a few opting for Professional. About 95% of all DAWs that DD sells use Home Premium. The down side is that you'll need a Jaws Professional license upgrade, if you haven't already got this flavour of Jaws. Best wishes. As some of you will know, I've been having terrible issues with jaws and my recently repaired system. I've decided to bite the bullet and reformat the hard drive and start fresh. Baring this in mind I've decided to go with Windows 7 for the new install. Is there any particular advantage to getting Profession or Ultimate over Home Premium as most of the differences seems to be with security and networking, which won't be necessary as it'll hardly be connected to the net or the home network. Also, my system has separate drives, the C drive where the operating system is installed, and audio drive where sample library and CakeWalk projects are stored. When I do the reformat, will the audio drive also be formatted? The audio drive is not external. I'll do a full back up of the audio drive in any case, but I'd just like to know in advance what to expect. Thanks in advance. Cheers Darren www.karmistry.com<http://www.karmistry.com>
