  Hi, Darren,

Here's the text of an article I wrote for the CT 7 release that I hope will
be helpful. The developer intended that the installation program for
CakeTalking would detect the SONAR version and automatically open this document
for you on running the CakeTalking installer. Have you actually tried
installing CakeTalking yet? I really hope not as, if you did, that nice
feature seems broken!

  OK, here's the text:

How to Update SONAR 7 to Version 7.0.2 or Higher.

CakeTalking for SONAR 7 requires that your version of SONAR is at least
version 7.0.2. Although you have successfully installed SONAR, the CakeTalking
installation program has determined that you have version 7.00 or 7.0.1 of
SONAR installed. This document instructs you on how to update to version 7.0.2.
And once you have learnt how to do that, you can update to even higher versions
as they are released. These instructions should be helpful to both blind and
sighted customers, but they are optimized for the JAWS user. Now you need to
read and follow the instructions below in order to update to 7.0.2.

  1.0. Overview of Update Process.

Note: The terms "update", "maintenance release" and "patch" have the same
meaning in this document.

Before taking the steps below, here's an overview of what you need to do.
Make sure that you have successfully registered your unit of SONAR with
Cakewalk. If you run SONAR and it does not nag you to register, then you have
successfully registered or someone has registered SONAR for you. If it asks
you to register, you must do so before continuing with the steps below.

You will determine the version of SONAR you have installed. If you have
7.0.1, you only need the update to 7.0.2. If you have 7.0, you must download
and install 2 updates: the one to take you from 7.0 to 7.0.1 and then the
update to take you from 7.0.1 to 7.0.2. You will visit the Cakewalk technical
support page and find the update or "patch" to SONAR that you need. You must
be prepared to enter your SONAR Serial Number and other contact details. Your
SONAR Serial Number can be found in the packaging for your product or by
running SONAR and pressing ALT+H, and the letter A or selecting Help | About
from SONAR's menu. If you ordered your unit of SONAR from Dancing Dots and
requested that they open your product and label it, you will find your SONAR
Serial Number in braille on the inside cover of the jewel case that contains
your SONAR DVD. You must also know whether you have installed the Producer
edition or the Studio edition of SONAR.

You will download and run the patch that you need. If you must run 2
updates, you will repeat all the steps above in order to apply the second
update.

1.1. Determining Your Version and Edition of SONAR 7.

Run SONAR. Press INSERT+CONTROL+V and JAWS should report the version of
SONAR; either SONAR 7.0 or 7.0.1. Alternatively, press INSERT+H and then type
the letter A to display SONAR's About Box that tells you what version of SONAR
is installed and also gives you your SONAR Serial Number. Press ESCAPE to
close the About Box.

If JAWS should report that you actually do have version 7.0.2 then please
contact Dancing Dots technical support to report the problem. Press INSERT+T
to determine whether you have SONAR Producer or Studio installed.

If you have 7.0, you must perform the steps below twice: once to update to
7.0.1 and then to update to 7.0.2.

  1.2. Downloading from Cakewalk's Site.

From experience, we know that Cakewalk sometimes changes the way they offer
SONAR updates or, as they call them , patches. If the download instructions
given here seem incorrect, we advise you to explore their site to determine if
you can follow the procedure for downloading the patches yourself. If you are
unsuccessful, contact Cakewalk support by E-mailing to support@xxxxxxxxxxxx or
calling 1-888-Cakewalk. These instructions are based on the pages displayed on
cakewalk.com in late February, 2008.

2.0. Steps for Downloading the Patch.

  1. Go to www.cakewalk.com.

  2. Press INSERT+F7 to bring up the list of links. Type the letter N until
you hear "NAV/support" and press ENTER to go to Cakewalk's main support page.

  3. If you need version 7.0.1, find the link that says: "SONAR 7.0.1
Maintenance Release". There is also a link called "SONAR 7.0.2Update". Follow
the link for the version you require.

  4. The page that displays next gives you a great deal of information on the
improvements contained in this update. The link for downloading the update
itself is found at the bottom of the page. To move quickly to it, press
INSERT+F7 and type the letter S until you hear the link to the patch that you
need. Press ENTER. The page that displays next asks for your E-mail address
twice, your name and your SONAR 7 Serial Number.

  5. After the page loads and JAWS stops speaking, press CONTROL+HOME to move
to the top of the page. Press the letter F to move focus to the first form
field which should be for entering your E-mail address. Press ENTER to enable
JAWS Forms Mode.

  6. Now type your E-mail address and press TAB again to enter it a second
time. Press TAB.

  7. Type your first name and press tab again. Type your Last name and press
TAB.

  8. Type the first 4 letters of the name of your edition. That is, "Prod" for
Producer or "Stud" for Studio. Press TAB.

  9. Up until this point, JAWS works well with this page in Forms Mode by
announcing the name of the field after you tab to it. But when you press TAB
again, you will actually be on the first of a series of fields for entering
your Serial Number although JAWS cannot automatically tell you the name of the
field while in Forms Mode. The Serial Number is broken up into multiple
fields. You will enter the numbers of your Serial Number but none of the
punctuation marks. You do not need to type the first 4 characters which are
probably CWSP or CWSS.

  10. You begin by typing the 7 that follows the first 4 letters of your Serial
Number. Pres TAB and enter the next 2 numbers which are probably 00 or 01.
Tab again.

  11. Enter the next six numbers. Tab again and enter the last 6 numbers of
your Serial Number.

  12. Tab to the Download button and press space or ENTER.

If you successfully entered all information, a screen will appear to tell you
that, "Success! The email with your log-in credentials is on it's way

You have been granted access to download the free SONAR Update."

  13. Now check your E-mail for a message from Cakewalk and follow the
instructions provided. The E-mail message will contain a link to a page that
may contain another link. Eventually, you will find a page that has a link to
the patch that matches your own SONAR Serial Number. Press ENTER on that link
to begin the download.

3.0. Using the Standard Windows Download Dialog.

The standard Windows download dialog will appear after you press ENTER on the
download link. Save the patch to a location that you will remember. To learn
where Windows intends to save it, press ALT+I to move focus to the Look In
field. Change that location if you like. Another technique for making it more
convenient to run programs you download is to uncheck the box that says "Close
this dialog after download completes". If you uncheck it, you have the option
to run the file or open the folder where it has been saved after the download
is complete.

Run the patch and follow the instructions provided.

  4.0. Verifying Update.

Once you have updated your version of SONAR to 7.0.2, run SONAR 7. Press
INSERT+CONTROL+V or ALT+H, A to confirm.

Again, if you were unable to find the page on Cakewalk's site to request the
updates you need, contact Cakewalk technical support to request help using
their support@xxxxxxxxxxxx address or by calling 1-888-cakewalk. If you have
not succeeded in applying the update or updates you need, contact Cakewalk
technical support first. If they cannot help you or if you need someone from
Dancing Dots to support you, E-mail support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  Subject: [ddots-l] Sonar 7 updates

  Hi all

I've just received my version of Sonar 7.

Now, I need to download and install the updates.

  If I install v7.02, do I also need v 7.01?

I only ask because the CakeWalk website says that they've made both downloads
available, which makes me feel that they are both necessary.

  Cheers
