OK, if anything is running, as long as no audio is coming from sonar, you
won't have a problem when switching the monitor, because sonar is not using
the auio card. That means windows is free to take the audio card and use it
or do whatever.
However once sonar is using the card, if windows tries to take over the
audio card, it will be a conflict, so sonar's audio engine will either stop
or an audio drop out will occur. Do you understand the issue? Is when both
systems (windows and sonar) are trying to access the same card that this
will become an issue. If everything is quiet and sonar is just sitting
there, you could have every single synth open, but as long as they're not
playing back or using the audio engine, when you switch the monitor, windows
will produce a sound which it will be allowed to do, because the card is
free. If sonar is playing and windows tries to access the card, it's not
free, so it might not do anything, or it might cause an audio drop out. That
all depends on sonar, your audio interface, the drivers you're using etc.
Sonar takes exclusive controll over whatever device it's assigned, unless
you check the box to tell Sonar to share drivers.
If you switch your monitor with sonar stopped, you should hear a "hardware
removed" sound from your motu, it's windows letting you know that hardware
was removed. This sound playback in itself can be your issue. Here's another
suggestion, maybe this will work for you, hope you try it. Go to controll
panel and go to sound. In there, look for windows sounds scheme. Switch it
to "no Sound." This will turn off all windows sounds except the startup
sound. This should help your problem. You can also go to personalize and
select the windows sounds link, and shut them off from there as well. If you
don't want the startup sound either, uncheck the box that says "Play startup
sound."
Please at least try this before you do anything else.

I can switch over with Atmosphere Deluxe running and nothing changes or
drops out. It's just when I'm recording or playing audio within Sonar that
this strange thing happens.

Get your speaker issue worked out first, and then worry about the monitor. I
have a feeling that once you get the windows sound to come out through your
realtec, the audio engine won't drop out. However, you might run into ct
problems, if windows does decide to switch your screen resolution or such
because you switch the monitor. Note that everytime you return the monitor
to the system windows *should* return the resolution to the default value
(as I think it saves them per monitor), but it's while the monitor is
unplugged that you might have issues.

Annabelle,
Seems to me that if switching monitors is causing you problems, and that you
absolutely need to have both computers, why not just purchase a cheap
monitor for the other computer and not switch at all? They're pretty cheap.
I know you just received a new DAW, but don't fight something like this over
a $100 or so monitor.

recording, I want to switch the monitor over to the A-switch, on my
documents computer, to type while the B-side, my music machine is recording.
two separate tasks. I don't see what that has to do with copyright? I'm

OK, well regarding drm, when you unplug something from the computer,
specially digital outputs, windows by defaults turns them off or looks for
other analog alternatives, as to prevent piracy of any sort. Also, if
windows can't tell if something's plugged into an analog jack (by using what
is called jack sensing) it also shuts off the output or switches to another
available card. This all has to do with drm and preventing you from
violating copyright for protected content. For example when playing a
protected blue-rey disc, if windows doesn't detect an HDCP (High-definition
copy protection) capable monitor/receiving device, it will not play the
disc; it's non allowed. If it does play the disc, it will do so in standard
definition, not in high definition, it depends how the hdcp was setup for
the disc/player.
To apply this to you, because you don't have speakers plugged in, it's
probably why your headphones aren't working, though it should detect when
you plug them in. It just might be that snese the motu is set to be the
default card, when the new card is active, windows won't switch to it,
because in your preference you chose the motu as the default card, which
it's already using. Therefore, windows won't switch to another card, unless
your prefered choice, (the motu) is not available. Hense why I worte to
unplug/turn off the motu, plug in the headphones, and power on your
computer. Why do all this? Because even if you plugged in your headphones
and switched the motu off and windows started using the built-in
souncard/headphones, jaws for some reason (at least in my case) takes a bit
to switch to another card, and sometimes it doesn't at all until you restart
jaws, and if windows doesn't feel like it, it might not switch over and
start using your built-in sound card.

Hey are the 2 machines in the same room/next to each other? If so, consider
a KVM switch box or a splitter box just for the monitor. Or, if your monitor
has multiple inputs, switch that way. Unplugging and plugging the monitor
can cause issues, with windows 7's drm, screen resolution and automatic
switching, and eventually wire/pin waring problems if using VGA or DVI
ports.

I don't know why, but when I press record, then when I press stop after
recording, JAWS won't speak to me. Right now, I have both JAWS and my main
Windows Audio, as well as the music I make, coming out the MOTU. I want to
have JAWS and the Windows audio come out of the Realtech HD Audio Sound
Card, but when I do that, I don't hear anything when I plug the headphones
into the jack on top of my computer's tower. Also, if I happen to switch the
monitor over to my other machine while recording or playing, the audio
engine turns completely off. Is there a way to fix it so that the Audio
Engine isn't affected when I switch the monitor between my music machine and
my documents machine? I've tried looking at the power options in Windows 7,
but that didn't do anything. Please help!
