I've never used them on live drums, but they've performed very well for vocal and guitar tracking, though I'd probably like a bit more available gain when using dynamic microphones. I'm generating a lot of high track count backing tracks recently and usually use it as a break-out box to add extra analogue I/O to my MOTU 2408-based DAW (the Saffire is connected for input and output to a MOTU interface via ADAT, though my main monitor speakers and my most commonly-used synths are connected to it directly for stand-alone use (works great). At the moment my MOTU PCI card is in the process of moving to a new DAW machine, so I'm actually using the Saffire directly via its fire wire connection to my old DAW and it's doing surprisingly well - stable and the latency isn't bad, given that this is not the fastest PC in the world. My new DAW should be up and running by next week and I'm tempted to test the Saffire's performance directly connected to that before I hook it back up to the MOTU, just for interests sake. I was extremely reluctant to buy this unit when my dealer recommended it, as I'd previously suffered horrendous issues with Focusrite's earlier model, the Saffire Pro 24 I/O, which I could never get to consistently lock to an external ADAT clock - this newer unit locks very quickly and reliably every single time and I can't really recommend it highly enough if its specification meets your needs and your pocket. But if you buy it from a reputable dealer, you can try it and if it doesn't work return it before 30 days, depending on where you're located. I know many here and on other lists favor the fw1884, but from my experience with tascam, their preamps are ok, not all that for that price range though, and they've discontinued it, so no luck there... The Onyx I series mixers are the only interfaces that work great for us out of the box. There are other interfaces that work, but all require some extra time and effort. Most don't have accessible control panels. You can make some of those panels work through hot spot sets, but subjecting novice users to Hot Spot Clicker isn't something that they appreciate. If you can afford it, get an Onyx mixer. That is the best I can suggest now, for performance, stability, and accessibility. The entry 820I has 2 mic/instrument inputs, 2 stereo inputs, and a single input that is either mic or stereo. You need $400 for it. Mackie also makes a line of Onyx interfaces. These aren't compatible with Pro Tools, though. I haven't tried them yet, but suspect that the driver quality should be similar (that is, good). You can put the system on suspend/hibernate if you power down the ProjectMix first. That's annoying, though. You must also close Sonar. The setting which might help fix the problem is USB suspend on the windows vista/7 advanced power settings. The other thing is maybe unplugging the unit before putting the system to sleep. C1E halt state has to do with the procesor and how windows handles power to it, reducing and increasing the voltage to the cpu depending on system tasking. This might or might not be a good thing to have disabled, depends on your hardware configuration, in specific the motherboard you're using. I have a ProjectMix, and have been using it on Windows 7 64-bit. It runs fine. It isn't perfect. Like most all of M-Audio's external devices, it doesn't support suspend, so, if you put the computer to sleep and/or hibernate, it won't work anymore when you wake the computer up. As long as you don't use suspend/sleep or hibernate, and just shut the computer down when you're finished working, there aren't any problems. The control panel application also requires you to use the Jaws cursor, and is only semi accessible. In terms of performance and stability, though, it is fine. M-Audio used to be well known for rock solid drivers. Strangely enough, they're now notorious for terrible drivers. M-Audio is no longer a company. M-Audio was purchased a few years back by Avid. Avid now uses M-Audio as a trade name for multimedia products that they make for low-cost consumer applications. That's why older M-Audio product seem quite a bit more premium than the million varieties of cheaply built plastic junk that they sell now. Unfortunately, even the older gear needs newer drivers to work with newer versions of Windows. Avid doesn't seem to feel that it is a priority to support gear that they no longer sell. Besides, they aren't worried about M-Audio's professional reputation, since pros wouldn't buy any of their current gear. They only care that casual purchasers at local computer stores will recognize the M-Audio name, and will make their $150 impulse purchase of a M-Audio plastic thing over their competitor's $150 plastic thing. M-Audio was good competition for Avid, anyway, so killing off M-Audio's better product lines and eating through their reputation only helps them out. Sorry to say that there aren't hardly any good, inexpensive, and accessible interfaces out now. The great buy, for quality and accessibility, at the moment, are the Mackie Onyx mixers. The 820I is $400, and certainly isn't little/portable, though. It would be fine at home, but not for carrying around with a laptop. Maybe one of the Edirol interfaces would work for dirt cheap ($100), but be prepared to go through a bit of accessibility frustration.
